About America
America's many exciting cities, vast size, and geographic and cultural diversity makes it a
popular destination for tourists from all over the world. The American scene changes dramatically
from its northern border with Canada to its southern border with Mexico and from its east coast with
the Atlantic Ocean to its west coast with the Pacific Ocean.Regions of America:
America is separated primarily into six regions. American regions include New England, the Mid Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West. America also has States and territories that are not located within these six regions. Alaska is separated from the rest of the states by Canada to the North and Hawaii is separated from the rest of the States by 2500 miles of the Pacific Ocean to the west. The majority of the American Territories are islands in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans or the Gulf of Mexico.
Urban America:
The American Outdoors offers an adventure for any who seek it. America boasts thousands of miles of trail for hiking, biking or horse back including trails through mountains, thickets, open plains, and deserts. There is an unlimited amount of fun and entertainment to be had in the American outdoors including Fishing, hunting, camping, swimming, skiing, and the list goes on and on.
America has over 365 National Park areas, which include National Historic Parks, Battlefield Areas, and Nation Forest/Preserves and hundreds more State Parks and other state sites. National or State Parks are some of the most popular American outdoors vacation ideas. Some of the most popular of these parks include mountains, caves, beaches, rivers, and lakes.
Many of the best rural destinations in America are in mountain regions. These mountainous areas offer beautiful landscapes and peaceful atmospheres. Many people, especially people that live in highly urban areas love to visit these areas to get away from the city life and into the vast expanses of nature. A couple of contrasting but equally beautiful mountain areas in America are the Yosemite National Park in California and Big Bend National Park in Texas. Yosemite National Park is the number one rock climbing attraction in America. Climbers come from all over the world to tackle El Capitan, the most challenging climb of Yosemite National Park. Big Bend on the other hand has a mixture of towering peaks and wide open desert area.
Rural America:
If you are looking to explore the more urban side of America there are plenty of exciting American cities to visit. The most interesting thing about America cities is their diversity. A visit to an east coast city like Washington D.C. is a much different experience from a visit to a west coast city like Los Angeles or a city in Texas like San Antonio. The culture and history of each city is reflected in its museums, monuments, and architecture.
America has some of the biggest and best amusement parks in the world. If you consider the Disney parks, the Six Flags parks, and all the water parks there is nowhere in America that you would have to travel far to find an exciting roller coaster or a refreshing water slide. American amusement parks offer some of the most thrilling roller coasters in the world including the Kingda Ka, the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, located in Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey and the world famous Millennium Force, voted the best steel rollercoaster in the world, at Cedar Point in Ohio.
Coastal America:
American has many hundreds of miles of coastline. The three major American coasts are the Pacific Ocean Coast, the Atlantic Ocean Coast, and the Gulf of Mexico Coast. Approximately 80 percent of the American Population lives along these three coastlines which means most of the major cities and urban attractions are located on the coast. These coasts also offer beaches, fishing, swimming, boating and many other water activities that tourists tend to flock to.
Culture:
The geographical separation of the regions of America also includes a cultural separation. The difference in cultures from one American region to another almost makes it seem that you are traveling to another country. Along with different cultures come different foods, entertainment, architecture, religions, and even accents. Some of the most notable cultural differences in America include the heavily French influenced Cajun culture in Louisiana, the fast paced city living in New England, and the slower paced country living of the South.
Climate:
Due to the vast size and different topology in America the climate varies drastically from one location to another. America has tropical climate in southern Florida and arctic climates in Alaska. The northern and mountainous regions of America can get bitterly cold at times but the Southern regions rarely drop below freezing all year long.
History:
Although American history is limited compared to other countries in the world, there is still much history to see especially on the east coast. Only a couple of centuries after its founding, America has a history that rivals countries that have lasted millennia. Some of the biggest concentration of historical buildings and historical locations in America are in the New England Area. Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City are prime examples of this rich American history. Many famous American Revolutionary battlefields can be visited in New England and many American Civil War battlefields can be visited throughout the American South, New England, and Mid-Atlantic regions.

New England has some of the oldest settlements and is the most historically significant regions in America. This
six state region is located in the northeastern most part of the country north and east of the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Historic Towns:
One of the rarely acknowledged jewels of New England is the many towns, cities, and plantations that have been around
since the early colonization era of America, Some as early as the early-1600s. A couple of these destinations that can still
be visited today include Plymouth Massachusetts; originally the Plymouth Colony was settled by the passengers of the
mayflower in 1622, and Boston the current capital of Massachusetts, founded in 1639 by Governor John Winthrop. Some of the other
earliest and most known towns in New England include Salem, the location of the infamous Salem Witch Trials, Cambridge, currently
a University town, New Haven Connecticut, and Providence Rhode Island.
Activities:
Skiing and snowboarding is great New England activities. Some of the best mountains in New England to ski include the White
Mountains of New Hampshire and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Maine, Connecticut, and Massachusetts also have some ski
slopes.
Much of New England is on the Atlantic Coast so there are many water activities like boating, fishing, swimming available to
visitors. The water in this region is a little cold throughout much of the year but the beaches are very popular.

The American Mid-Atlantic Region, stretching from the American border with Canada in New York State to the United
States capital in Washington D.C., contains some of the best tourist attractions and travel destinations that the
world has to offer. From the fast pace and mind boggling vastness of New York City to the vast rural areas beyond
the cities and the beautiful rolling mountains of the Poconos, from the quite colonial towns throughout the area
to the bustling boardwalks on the Atlantic Shore, this region is a dream location for any traveler.
Getting Around:
The Mid-Atlantic Region has the best rail services in the country. You can hop a train from any major city in
the region and arrive at any other city in no time. Rail services in this region are offered in the New Jersey
shore, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. With rail services, it is possible to see
much of the region for a fraction of the cost of going by car or by bus. Train services are only the best option
if you are looking to only explore the big cities. If you are interested in exploring the more rural areas of the
region you will be better off traveling by car.
Activities:
The American Mid-Atlantic Region is probable the most activity rich areas in the country. This region has indoor,
outdoor, rural and urban activities to enjoy.
The activity that most tourists to the area take part in is exploring the cities. Each city offers a different array
of foods, cultures, art, architecture, and entertainment. The advantage of city activities is that there is so much
to do in a very small area and it is easy to get from one place to another. The disadvantage of city activities is
the relative costs. Everything that you do in a big city costs significantly more than it would cost elsewhere.
Outside of the city there are a lot of cheaper and slower paced activities to take part in. This region offers many
hundreds of miles of hiking trails to explore. Many tourists in this area also enjoy white water rafting and camping
in the Poconos.
If gambling is your forte, you may enjoy a trip to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Atlantic City is considered by some as
the east coast version of Las Vegas. The casinos in Atlantic City can be found along the Atlantic City Boardwalk
along the beach.

The American South Region is made up of 12 states, each very distinct in their
culture, cuisine, entertainment, architecture, and even their accent in some
states. Much of the region still retains the slower paced country living that
the south is known for but with the growth of manufacturing in the south many
cities have emerged that rival some of the bustling northern cities. Due to
its relative mild climate, the southern states can be comfortably visited year
around which is why many retire to southern states from the other more extreme
climates.
History:
The American Southern Region is bursting with historical sites. In Jamestown
Virginia you can still explore the earliest successful British settlement in North
America. Travelers in this region may also tour Revolutionary and Civil War
battlefields. Many southern cities have attempted to maintain a feel of the early
colonial America in their buildings and lifestyle. You may also visit some of the
many recreated colonial era villages like the one in Williamsburg Virginia. Like most
of the country American South also has a very rich Native American History. Travelers
to this region may enjoy exiting and educational festivals, explore old Native American villages,
or search for Native American artifacts.
Cuisine:
Some of the best food in the country is unique to the American South. Dinner time in the
south means something a little bit different than means in many of the other states in
the country and most southerners pride themselves on their cooking. From Cajun and Creole
food to soul food, from barbeque to Mexican food, this region has more unique styles of
cooking and eating than any other region in the country.

The American Southwest region is a six state region located west of and including Texas and
east of and not including California and it spans north and south from the Mexican border to
northern Nevada and Utah. Although much of it is desert,
the American Southwest Region has some of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. Some
of the most notable of these attractions include the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, and
Arches National Park. The great destinations in the American Southwest Region
are often few and far between, but driving through this region is an attraction in itself with a
stunning mixture of desert, cliffs, canyons, mountains and much more.
Hiking and Backpacking:
Many hikers and backpackers come to the southwest region for its hundreds of miles of protected trails
within the National Park systems and other public land in the region. The National Park Systems offer
trails of varying degrees of difficulty, ranging from a paved sidewalk to a steep uphill climb. Regardless
of the difficulty level, the marked National Park trails are always worth the effort.

The American West is a nine state region spanning from the Rocky Mountains
in Colorado to the Pacific Coast bordering California, Oregon, and Washington.
Traditionally Alaska and Hawaii are not included in the American West Region
but for the purposes of this site they will be included here. The landscape in
this region changes drastically from east to west, starting with the great snow
covered Rocky Mountains, passing through the Mojave Desert, the Sierra Nevada
Mountains, and the Yosemite Valley, and finally the beautiful beaches of the
Pacific coast.
Activities:
Activities in the American West Region are as diverse as the landscape. One of
the most popular activities in the Rocky Mountain area is skiing and snowboarding.
Colorado and Wyoming have some of the best ski resorts in the world, some of the
best being in Aspen and Vail. Hiking and camping are very popular in the Sierra
Nevada and Mojave Desert area, especially in the National Parks. Many tourists
also enjoy hunting and fishing in the American West but there are many wildlife
regulations that must be adhered to. Surfing is a popular pastime on the west coast
and Hawaii. Another popular activity that many enjoy in this region is kayaking in
California or sea kayaking in Alaska.

In addition to the fifty states listed above, America also administers several self-governing territories.
The citizens of these territories share some, but not all of the rights and privileges of an American Citizen. Due to the
geographic separation these territories cannot be grouped as a region. Below is a listing of the most notable of these
territories.
Puerto Rico:
Puerto Rico is a Caribbean Island located in to the Southeast of America near the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. The temperatures in Puerto
Rico rarely drop below 70 degrees even in the winter so this is a great vacation spot year around.
While visiting Puerto Rico one of the most notable destinations include the Rio Camuy Caverns, containing a giant sinkhole and the third largest underground
river in the world. Other activities in Puerto Rico include touring the mountains, scuba diving the Caribbean coast, horseback riding, or just enjoying the
beautiful beaches. Another interesting attraction in Puerto Rico is the Bioluminescent Bays. These areas are home to microscopic organisms that glow when they
are agitated at night. Visitors may take kayak tours of these bays. The waters light up with the motion of the kayak and with every stroke of the paddle.
U.S Virgin Islands:
The Virgin Islands are made up of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. These islands are located in the Caribbean Sea near Puerto Rico. Like Puerto
Rico, the Virgin Islands have near perfect temperature and weather all year long except in the case of a hurricane or tropical storm.
The U.S. Virgin Islands are home to many beautiful natural scenes including Buck Island Reef National Monument, Virgin Islands National Park, and Salt River Bay. In these
locations visitors may see marine gardens, coral reefs, a submarine canyon, mango forests, and much more.
N. Mariana ISlands:
The Northern Mariana Islands contains three main islands in the Pacific Ocean including Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.
Of all of the Mariana Islands, Saipan has the most notable scuba diving locations, scuba shops, and scuba guides. Saipan also has
several guided hiking expeditions. These excursions traverse jungle, swamps, mountains, and even a bird sanctuary known as Forbidden
Island.
Rota also has several scuba diving opportunities. Rota boasts some of the most crystal clear water in the islands. The real charm of Rota
is its atmosphere. You get the beautiful tropical island without the emphasis on tourism. Visiting Rota is like visiting a small town anywhere
else in the world with the added benefit of white sandy beaches and beautiful scenery.
Tinian is the least populated of the main Mariana Islands. This island was the staging location for the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that carried
the atomic bomb that was dropped on Japan during World War II. Tourists can visit the Enola Gay Monument and several other locations significant
war. Tinian is also known for its diving and snorkeling opportunities. Diving experiences unique to this island include a cove where World War II
relics were dumped, coral reefs, an underwater cave, and an abundance of marine life including sea turtles.
American Samoa:
American Samoa is a small island in the Pacific Ocean about 100 km east of Samoa. Much of the tourism in this territory
revolves around the tropical wildlife and the marine habitats. The best destination for viewing and enjoying the island
is the National Park of American Samoa.
American Samoa has a very unique culture. Before visiting the Island it is a good idea to learn about some of the customs
and curtseys that are expected of all visitors. The distinctive culture of the American Samoans offers a very interesting
learning experience for any visitor that is willing to be part of it.
Guam:
Guam is another island territory in the Pacific Ocean. Even though Guam is not an American State, the culture of Guam is highly
reflective of the U.S. Military. The island of Guam is used as a strategic staging point for the American military. Guam hosts the
War in the Pacific National Historical Park which contains many former battlefields and other World War II reminders.
Guam is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and water entertainment including diving, swimming, boating, and much more.
